Those who have achieved any measure of success in the pool understand that it is not by some large stroke (pun intended) of luck, or as a result of one or two amazing practices that they achieved something special. Rather, it’s the steady, consistent application of hard work that gets them to the top of the podium. In that spirit, here are some tips for making you a consistently consistent swimmer in the pool this season: 1. Take the power back during your motivational lapses. It is tough when you...
Congrats to all of the CWAC swimmers that competed in the Mid-Season Challenge this past weekend. It was a great opportunity for many of our younger swimmers to get a chance at a prelim / final format on Saturday. Thank you to all of the parents and officials for helping the meet to run so smoothly. Shout out to Doris Weffer for all her work organizing and running the concessions and gear for the meet. It was a big meet and we were able to get everyone in. Click here...
An easy way to have more fun in the pool while also seeing more progression and improvement in your best times is to line up a solid mental attitude. The way we mentally approach our swimming workouts and competition play a huge role in the way we perform in the water—whether we give up prematurely, whether we can avoid getting lost in the hype and largesse of our goals, and whether we are even enjoying and finding value in the process. How many of the following five mental habits are...
Most athletes think they drink “enough,” but when performance dips or fatigue creeps in, hydration is usually the quiet culprit. A simple rule makes it easy: take your body weight, divide it by two, and that number is your baseline daily hydration in ounces. That’s for everyone—adults, teens, and youth athletes. So a 150-lb athlete should aim for at least 75 ounces of fluid each day before even accounting for training demands. Once you add sports into the mix, the requirement goes up fast. Athletes need an additional 16–24 ounces...

What can we learn from swimmers who perform at a consistently high level? As it turns out, lots—here are just a few that you can apply to your own swimming: 1. Get up after you get beat down. Mike Tyson once quipped, “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” While he was talking about the sting of a boxer’s glove, it’s equally applicable to the bite and disappointment that comes with coming up short on a goal. Will you be the swimmer that allows failure to...

Mental toughness. It’s something we always use to ascribe the top swimmers who surround us. They are the ones that are unflinching in the face of pressure in big moments. And they are the ones who are there at the end of practice, hammering down with full effort and full focus as other swimmers fall off the pace and intensity. It’s one of those traits that we imagine is innate and natural. And while some swimmers seem to come by it earlier and with ease, mental toughness is something we...
